7 Days in Cairns: The Real Itinerary Plus the Great Barrier Reef

I flew into Cairns from Melbourne on 17 January, a motel on Sheridan Street booked, Skyrail and a waterfall day already locked in before I’d even landed. Cairns was the fourth stop on a month-long Australia trip, and by the time I got there I’d already had Sydney, Tasmania and Melbourne to compare it against. None of that prepared me for how different it felt. Lush, hot, humid, mountains hard against the coast, closer to Southeast Asia than to anywhere else on the trip. It took me until my second day to actually admit that to myself.

This is the exact sequence I’d use if I were landing tomorrow: the six days I actually lived (arrival plus five real day trips), plus the reef day I’d add if I went back. Is 7 Days in Cairns Enough?

Yes, it’s the sweet spot for fitting the reef in without the trip turning into a checklist. If you’ve got fewer days, here’s how I’d compress it rather than trying to squeeze all seven days in:

The Route at a Glance

After a month of early closing times in Tasmania and Melbourne, a night market running until 11pm every single night felt like a small novelty. Seventy-plus stalls between Abbott Street and the Esplanade, and it’s the easiest possible first evening: no plan required, just walk until something smells good. If you’re arriving late in the evening, the rest of this itinerary doesn’t depend on catching the markets: save them for another night, or skip them for dinner near your accommodation instead.

Worth knowing before your own first night: getting from the airport currently means a taxi or rideshare (see Practical Tips below for what’s changing). The city itself felt noticeably dimmer after dark than Sydney or Melbourne, in a way that took some adjusting to.

The Daintree is the oldest rainforest on Earth, roughly 180 million years old, tens of millions of years older than the Amazon, and it’s obvious within minutes of walking into Mossman Gorge that you’re somewhere properly ancient. The water running over the granite boulders is startlingly clear and cold enough to actually swim in, and a shuttle bus from the visitor centre is the only way in, no private cars past that point, which keeps the place feeling wild rather than paved over for tourists. In the afternoon, a croc cruise along the Daintree River through the mangroves, saltwater crocodiles doing exactly what they’ve been doing here for longer than almost anything else alive on the planet.

Fitzroy Island sits about 45 minutes off the coast by ferry, a continental island with a proper fringing reef right off the beach, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park itself, just not the outer reef most people picture when they hear the name (more on that distinction on Day 7). Nudey Beach, despite the name, is an excellent stretch of coral sand backed by rainforest, about a 20-minute, 1.3km walk from the resort, and the snorkelling straight off it was my own real introduction to the reef on this trip.

A full day here works if you want to properly relax. Half a day is enough to see the island’s highlights if you’d rather split the time, and if you go half-day, the Cairns Botanic Gardens on the mainland is a good way to spend the rest of it. The walking trails there run close enough to the airport approach that you can watch aircraft take off right overhead, which is its own small joy if you’re at all a fan of planes.

Millaa Millaa Falls, the one everyone’s seen in a shampoo ad whether they realise it or not, and Josephine Falls, both on the same day trip up into the Tablelands. The unplanned highlight of the whole day was a wild cassowary, one of the most dangerous birds on the planet by reputation, entirely unbothered by our presence at a respectful distance. The Kuranda Scenic Railway up, with a photo stop at Barron Falls along the way, then Skyrail back down, gliding directly over the same falls from above: two completely different ways of seeing the same rainforest, and worth doing both rather than picking one. Kuranda Koala Gardens is an easy add-on once you’re up there, walking distance from the railway station.

Palm Cove runs at a completely different pace from central Cairns, a paperbark-lined esplanade about a kilometre and a half long, restaurants opening straight onto the sand, twenty-five minutes north of the city and feeling like it. This is the day with nothing scheduled on purpose, after four straight days of tours: a proper swim, a long breakfast or lunch, and not much else.

Here’s why I’d still put it at the top of your own list, even though it wasn’t on mine. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth, and one of only a few living structures visible from space, per UNESCO’s own inscription criteria, a World Heritage Site since 1981, stretching over 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast. It’s home to more than 1,500 species of fish and 400 species of coral, along with green turtles, reef sharks, and giant clams that can grow more than a metre across. It’s managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the government body responsible for its protection. Reef tourism is a huge part of why Cairns exists as a destination in the first place: it’s the reason the Esplanade has a Reef Fleet Terminal built specifically for the boats that go out there every morning. Every other day trip in this itinerary is worth doing on its own terms, but for a lot of visitors, the reef is the actual reason Cairns is on the itinerary at all.

Budget roughly $220–$350 AUD per adult for a standard full-day outer-reef snorkelling trip, with the sweet spot for most first-timers around $260–$325. Premium boats, diving add-ons and helicopter combinations push higher. Prices vary by operator, season and inclusions, so check the current listing before booking.

If a seventh day doesn’t fit your own trip, that’s a real trade-off worth naming, not glossing over: the reef versus one of the other five day trips in this itinerary. I’d personally protect Kuranda and the Tablelands first, since they’re what actually happened for me and I can vouch for them directly.

Evenings and Where I Ate

Every day trip above got back into Cairns with enough daylight left for a proper evening. The Esplanade and the Lagoon are both an easy walk from most central accommodation, and most nights ended with some version of that walk.
