Digital Nomad Visas Filipinos Can Actually Get in 2026

Japan appears on almost every “best digital nomad visas” list published this year. A Philippine passport holder cannot get it. Not because of income, not because of paperwork, but because Japan’s programme is only open to nationals who do not need a Japanese tourist visa in the first place. We do. That one line, buried in a Ministry of Foreign Affairs notice, quietly disqualifies every Filipino who reads that list and starts saving.

That is the problem with almost everything written on this topic. The lists are real. The countries are real. They were written for somebody else’s passport.

So here is the version for ours. Every digital nomad visa for Filipinos below is checked against the issuing government’s own page, with the money in pesos and an honest answer about where you actually lodge it. Some you can file in Makati on a Tuesday. Some need a flight to Jakarta. A few of the most famous ones will never say yes to you at all, which is worth knowing before you spend six months building a bank balance for nothing.

Some links here are affiliate links. If you book through them we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, and it helps keep this site running. We only link to things we would point a friend toward.

The short answer for Philippine passport holders

Yes, Filipinos can get digital nomad visas. Seven programmes are open to us and can be lodged from Metro Manila or entirely online: Thailand, South Korea, Spain, Hungary, Croatia, the UAE and Colombia. The cheapest entry point by income is Colombia at about PHP 105,000 a month. Thailand asks for savings rather than monthly income, which suits freelancers better.

Two things to settle before the detail. First, you may not need one of these at all. A nomad visa buys a legal long stay with a residence card, a lease and a bank account. If you only want three months somewhere warm, our list of the cheapest visa-free countries Filipinos can enter without any paperwork is the cheaper answer, and the visa-free options in Asia alone cover more ground than most people think.

Second, the hard part is almost never the income. It is whether there is anywhere in this country to hand in the forms.

Rates used throughout: EUR 1 = PHP 72.81, USD 1 = PHP 62.74, THB 1 = PHP 1.90, KRW 1 = PHP 0.0466, COP 1 = PHP 0.01996, as of early September 2026. Check them before you budget, because they move.

Why a Philippine passport gets rejected before the money is even counted

Three mechanisms exclude Filipinos from nomad visa programmes, and none are visible on a generic listicle. Learning to spot them saves you weeks.

Visa-exemption gating. The programme accepts only nationals who can already enter that country without a tourist visa. Filipinos need one for Japan and for the Schengen area, so this single gate closes both Japan and Iceland to us regardless of income.

Named country lists. Some programmes just publish the nationalities they accept. Czechia names thirteen. Turkey names thirty-six. We are on neither.

Employer-jurisdiction gating. Latvia requires an employer registered in an OECD country. A Filipino freelancer registered with the BIR in Quezon City does not qualify, even earning well above the threshold.

Here is the useful part. Colombia uses exactly the same visa-exemption mechanism as Japan, and the Philippines is on Colombia’s exemption list, at item 37 of Resolución 5488 de 2022. Same gate, opposite result. That is why Colombia is the most overlooked option on this entire page.

The ones Filipinos cannot get, whatever the income

Japan. The Designated Activities visa needs both a tax treaty with Japan and visa-exempt entry. We have the treaty. We are not on the exemption list, which in Asia covers only Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. No income fixes this. If Japan is the dream, the honest route is a tourist visa and a short stay, with Korea’s F-1-D as the realistic Northeast Asia base.

Czechia names thirteen eligible countries and we are not among them. Turkey names thirty-six, all European or North American plus Russia and Ukraine. Iceland uses the same visa-exemption gate as Japan. Latvia is open only if your employer is registered in an OECD country, which rules out most Filipino freelancers working through their own BIR registration.

Two more worth correcting, because they turn up constantly on lists aimed at Filipinos. Serbia has no digital nomad visa. Remote workers there enter visa-free and then apply for ordinary temporary residence, which is a different process with different paperwork. And Georgia’s “Remotely from Georgia” is effectively dead, the Philippines is not on Georgia’s visa-free list, and applications route through Jakarta in person.

The digital nomad visas you can apply for from Metro Manila

These seven are open to us and do not require a flight to a third country just to submit paperwork.

Programme What they ask for In pesos Fee How long Where you file it
Thailand DTV THB 500,000 in savings, seasoned 3 months about PHP 950,000 PHP 18,000 180 days per entry, visa valid 5 years Thai e-Visa portal, processed by the embassy in Manila
Korea F-1-D Tiered by age and region, see below PHP 2.44m to 4.88m a year PHP 4,500 1 year validity, 1 year stay Korean Embassy, McKinley Town Center, Taguig
Spain EUR 2,442 a month about PHP 177,800 PHP 6,240 plus BLS fees 1 year, then a 3-year residence permit Consulate General Manila, booked through BLS
Hungary White Card EUR 3,000 net a month, held 6 months about PHP 218,400 PHP 7,620 1 year, extendable once, then it stops VFS Manila and VFS Cebu
Croatia EUR 3,622.50 a month about PHP 263,800 about PHP 9,900 Up to 18 months Police approval first, then VFS Manila for the entry visa
UAE USD 3,500 a month about PHP 219,600 AED 300 via ICP 1 year, renewable Entirely online
Colombia 3x minimum wage, COP 5,252,715 a month about PHP 104,800 see the Cancillería portal Up to 2 years Entirely online

Thailand is the easiest yes. The Royal Thai Embassy in Manila publishes its own DTV checklist, and what is missing from it matters as much as what is on it: no NBI clearance, no apostille, no notarisation. Filipinos are not on the extra-documentation nationality list. The money test is savings, not salary, which is the most freelancer-friendly rule of any programme here. If your income is lumpy but you have a cushion, Thailand will take you when Spain will not. The checklist we verified is dated June 2025, so confirm nothing has moved before you pay.

The five-year validity is what makes PHP 18,000 worth it. You get 180 days per entry, extendable by another 180 inside the country. Most people base themselves in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and it is worth comparing what a month in Sukhumvit actually costs before assuming Chiang Mai is cheaper, because the gap has narrowed. Fares swing hard on this route, so check current Manila to Bangkok prices on Trip.com before committing to dates.

Korea got dramatically easier this year, and almost nobody noticed. The F-1-D workation visa used to sit at a flat multiple of national income. As of the Korean Embassy Manila checklist dated 9 July 2026, it is tiered by your age and by where in Korea you intend to live, against a GNI per capita of KRW 52.41 million.

Your age Seoul metropolitan area Non-metropolitan and population-decline areas
18 to 34 GNI x 1.5, about PHP 3.66m a year GNI x 1, about PHP 2.44m a year
35 or older GNI x 2, about PHP 4.88m a year GNI x 1.5, about PHP 3.66m a year

Under 35 and willing to live outside Seoul, that lowest tier works out to roughly PHP 203,500 a month. A real Korean residence card for less than Croatia asks. Busan, Daegu and Gwangju all qualify.

Two things will catch you out. The Certificate of Employment must carry your HR department’s landline, and the embassy says plainly that a mobile number is not accepted, which is a real problem at a fully remote company. And because the Philippines sits on Korea’s tuberculosis screening list, you need a TB certificate from a hospital the embassy designates.

Spain’s number is not what you will read elsewhere. The threshold is 200 percent of the Spanish minimum wage, which rose to EUR 1,221 a month in February 2026. That makes it EUR 2,442, about PHP 177,800. You will find guides quoting a peso figure around PHP 135,000, taken from an older wage. You will also find EUR 2,849, which comes from doubling Spain’s annual comparison figure and dividing by twelve. Spain’s own consular computation sheet lists 200 percent of the SMI as EUR 2,442 flat. Use that. One more Manila trap: the consulate wants your NIE applied for before you lodge the visa, not after.

The ones worth a plane ticket, and the ones that are not

Some programmes are legally open to us and still practically out of reach, because there is no application point here.

Portugal’s D8 is the trap in every list written for Filipinos. The Portuguese Embassy in Jakarta, which covers us, states that national visas for residents of the Philippines must go through VFS in Jakarta or Bali. Manila and Cebu have honorary consulates and they do not take national visas. So a Portugal application means round-trip airfare, accommodation, and a second trip if a document is wrong, on top of a EUR 3,680 monthly threshold (about PHP 267,900) and an NBI clearance apostilled by the DFA, less than ninety days old.

Estonia is worse. EUR 4,500 net a month, about PHP 327,600, the highest in the EU, and the nearest application point is Tokyo. If either is genuinely your plan, price the flight before you decide, because it belongs inside the cost of the visa.

Several strong programmes are fully online, which removes the geography problem completely.

  • Malaysia DE Rantau. USD 24,000 a year for tech roles, about PHP 125,500 a month, or USD 60,000 for the non-tech professions added in 2024. Twelve months, renewable once. Same time zone, one flight home, large Filipino community already there. For most Philippine-based remote workers this is the sensible first nomad visa, and Kuala Lumpur rents are worth putting next to what you pay in Metro Manila. If you are still looking for the job that funds it, our roundup of remote tech companies hiring Filipinos is the place to start.
  • Indonesia E33G. USD 60,000 a year plus a USD 2,000 balance, at the official e-visa site. No nationality bar.
  • Malta. EUR 42,000 gross a year, online. But insurance must cover the EU and the UK, you need a signed Maltese lease before approval, and as a Schengen visa-required national you still face a separate entry visa with no full Maltese embassy in Manila.
  • Taiwan Employment Gold Card. NTD 160,000 a month, about PHP 317,300. The Philippines is not on Taiwan’s designated-countries list as of July 2026, so Filipino applicants need no local guarantor. Processing can run past sixty business days.

What it really costs beyond the visa fee

The application fee is usually the smallest number. Here is what a realistic Filipino applicant actually spends.

Item Typical cost Notes
NBI clearance PHP 155 Required by Korea, Portugal, Greece, Malta and others
DFA apostille PHP 100 to 200 per document Portugal and Greece require it, and it expires
Passport renewal if under 6 months validity PHP 950 regular, PHP 1,200 express See our passport renewal walkthrough
TB screening (Korea only) PHP 2,000 to 4,000 Embassy-designated hospitals only
Qualifying health insurance PHP 3,000 to 8,000 a month The big one, see below
Bank certificate PHP 100 to 300 per copy Most want 6 months of average daily balance

Insurance is where people get caught. These programmes do not accept a domestic HMO. Korea wants at least KRW 100 million of cover, roughly PHP 4.66 million, including repatriation. Malta wants EU and UK cover. Greece wants EUR 30,000. Your Maxicare card satisfies none of them, and finding out at the counter costs you the appointment slot. We compared the options in our guide to health insurance Filipinos abroad can rely on. For visa applications specifically, SafetyWing is what most people end up with, because the certificate is issued instantly.

See what SafetyWing costs for your visa application

One more practical thing. Sort your connectivity before you land, not after. Most of these visas require you to prove you are working remotely, and arriving without data while you wait for a local SIM appointment is a bad first week. An Airalo eSIM covers you from the airport in every country on this page.

What the BIR expects when you come home

Read this before you book anything.

Only a resident citizen is taxed by the Philippines on worldwide income, under Section 22(E) of the Tax Code. You become a non-resident citizen, and your foreign income stops being taxable here, by being physically outside the country at least 183 days in the taxable year. That is the number that matters.

Here is the trap. A digital nomad visa holder is not an OFW. The OFW exemption under Revenue Regulations No. 1-2011 needs DMW registration, a valid Overseas Employment Certificate, and a foreign employer paying you. A nomad visa holder has none of the three. Take a six-month Malaysia pass, come home at month five, and you are still a resident citizen with full worldwide-income liability and no exemption to fall back on. Plan the 183 days deliberately or plan to pay.

Your SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG contributions shift to voluntary membership rather than the OFW category, so they become optional and worth an actual decision. We are covering the tax side properly in its own post, because it deserves more than a section.

Frequently asked questions

Can Filipinos get a digital nomad visa?
Yes. Seven programmes are open to Philippine passport holders and lodgeable from Manila or online: Thailand, South Korea, Spain, Hungary, Croatia, the UAE and Colombia. Several more, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Malta and Taiwan, are open and fully online.

Which digital nomad visa is easiest for Filipinos?
Thailand’s DTV, because the Manila embassy publishes a checklist with no NBI clearance and no apostille, and because it tests savings rather than monthly income.

What is the cheapest digital nomad visa for a Filipino?
Colombia, at three times the local minimum wage, roughly PHP 104,800 a month. Malaysia’s tech track is next at about PHP 125,500 a month.

Can I get Japan’s digital nomad visa with a Philippine passport?
No. Japan restricts it to nationals of countries that both hold a tax treaty and have visa-exempt entry to Japan. The Philippines has the treaty but not the exemption.

Do I need an OEC to leave on a digital nomad visa?
No, because you are not registered as an overseas Filipino worker. That also means you cannot claim the OFW tax exemption, and you should expect immigration at NAIA to ask what you do for a living and when you are coming back.

Can I use Upwork or OnlineJobs.ph income to qualify?
It depends on the programme. Contract-based checklists like Korea’s want an employer certificate with an HR landline, which freelance platforms cannot produce. Savings-based tests like Thailand’s, and portfolio-friendly routes, are the realistic path for freelancers.

Pick the constraint that binds you first. If your income is irregular, start with Thailand. If you are under 35 and want a real residence card in a high-income country, look hard at Korea’s non-metropolitan tier, because that number quietly halved this year. If you want to stay in the same time zone and fly home in four hours, Malaysia.

Then work backwards from the paperwork rather than the destination. Get the NBI clearance, check your passport validity, and find out today whether your employer will put a landline on a certificate. Those three things are what delay applications, not the money.

And if a list tells you Japan or Turkey is an option, close the tab.
