When to Book Christmas Flights from the Philippines

Walk down Dapitan in Quezon City in late August and the Santa Claus figurines are already hanging three deep from the ceiling. That is the signal. Ber months, parol lights on the jeepneys, and somewhere in the back of your head the thought you keep postponing: I should book that flight. Here is the uncomfortable part. By the time the Christmas songs start on the radio, the cheapest seats for December are already gone.

Knowing when to book Christmas flights from the Philippines is worth more than any fare hack, and the answer is tighter than what American travel sites will tell you. This guide covers the deadline for December 2026, what the routes Filipinos actually fly are costing right now in pesos, why this year’s holiday calendar splits into two separate peaks, why the seat sale you are waiting for will not cover your dates, and what booking from Cebu, Clark or Davao changes. It is written for both halves of our audience: the reader in Metro Manila flying out for the holidays, and the OFW in Dubai or Hong Kong flying home. Every figure below is stamped with the date it was checked.

When to book Christmas flights from the Philippines: the short answer

As of 16 September 2026, Sunday 20 December is 95 days away and Wednesday 30 December is 105 days away. The Points Guy has pulled the 2026 to 2027 holiday booking deadline forward to the end of September or early October, ahead of the usual late-October window, because fares are running higher year on year. Their search data has Christmas fares 12 to 18 percent above last year, and international holiday fares about 16 percent higher.

So the honest position, written on 16 September: long-haul is the one to lock in first, because booking it even earlier would have bought you more, and every week from here costs a little more. For Northeast Asia you have roughly two weeks. For short-haul Asia you have until about mid-October before the curve turns against you. Prices rise sharply inside the final three weeks before departure, and booking inside the last fortnight carries something like a 25 percent premium.

Christmas 2026 has two peaks, not one

This is the bit that changes your booking, and no other guide has worked it out for this year.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. Under the official 2026 proclamation, that gives Philippine-based travelers two separate breaks rather than one long stretch:

December 24 is a special non-working day, December 25 is a regular holiday, December 30 is Rizal Day, December 31 is a special non-working day and January 1 is a regular holiday. There is also Bonifacio Day on Monday 30 November and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday 8 December if you want a cheaper short break before the rush. Two things follow. First, fares spike twice, around 18 to 23 December and again around 27 to 30 December, with a genuine dip in the middle. Flying out on Christmas Day itself is consistently one of the cheapest days of the whole period. Second, three leave days buy eleven, which means half the country is trying to book the same eleven days. That is the demand your fare is competing with.

What December flights from Manila actually cost

Numbers first, caveat second. These are Trip.com’s own route figures, checked on 16 September 2026.

Now the caveat, and it matters more than the table. Those December averages cover the entire month, and most of December is quiet. The first two weeks are some of the cheapest flying of the year. The spike lives in the eleven days from 18 December to 4 January, and it is steep enough that a Manila to Tokyo return inside that window can land at double the monthly average. Treat the column as a floor to measure against, not as a Christmas quote.

The other lever is the day you fly. Monday to Wednesday departures run about 13 percent cheaper than weekend ones, and in 2026 that works in your favour: 30 December is a Wednesday, so the New Year break starts on a cheap travel day.

The seat sale trap: why 9.9 and 11.11 will not get you home for Christmas

Waiting for the next big sale is the most common Filipino booking plan, and for Christmas it usually fails. Not because the sales are fake, but because of a line in the terms most people skip: the travel period.

Two examples from this year.

Cebu Pacific’s 9.9 Super Seat Fest ran its booking window from 8 to 10 September 2026, with base fares from PHP 1. The travel period is 1 January to 31 May 2027. December 2026 is not in it at all.

Philippine Airlines ran its Ultimate Seat Sale from 24 to 30 August 2026. That one does cover December, at up to 40 percent off domestic and 35 percent off international base fares for travel between 16 September 2026 and 31 January 2027. But the deeper discounts, up to 60 and 45 percent, only apply to travel from 1 February 2027 onward. And its booking window closed at the end of August.

The pattern is consistent. Airlines discount the seats they struggle to fill, and December 20 to January 7 fills itself. Piso fares run three to five times a year with 24 to 72 hours notice and they push you into the following year’s quiet months. So use a seat sale for what it is genuinely good for, which is booking your March or April trip now, and pay the real fare for Christmas.

Clark, Cebu and Davao: the departure nobody checks

Almost every booking guide written for Filipinos assumes you live within an hour of NAIA. Plenty of readers do not, and even the ones who do rarely check the alternatives.

Clark International Airport in Pampanga is the obvious one for anyone in Central or Northern Luzon, and increasingly for Metro Manila too when NAIA fares spike. Fewer carriers, but the December premium tends to be gentler because the demand pressure is lower. If you are coming from Manila, the P2P bus from NAIA to Clark makes the connection straightforward, though on peak December dates budget more time than the schedule suggests.

Mactan-Cebu handles most of the Visayas directly, with real international service to Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul and Dubai. Flying Cebu to Singapore directly instead of routing through Manila saves both the domestic leg and the overnight you would otherwise need. Davao’s Francisco Bangoy airport is thinner on international routes but strong domestically, and Mindanao travelers routinely overpay by defaulting to a Manila connection without pricing the alternative.

The rule of thumb: price the total, not the headline fare. A PHP 2,008 Manila to Cebu leg plus a Manila departure often beats nothing once you add the hotel night, the transfer and the risk of a delayed connection eating your international flight.

Coming home: what OFWs should book and when

If you are reading this from Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong or Singapore, your calculation is different. You are not choosing a destination, you are choosing a date, which removes your best cost lever.

Manila to Dubai is averaging PHP 35,108 return in December and PHP 46,928 in January, which tells you something useful: the return leg in early January is the expensive half, not the outbound in December. If your leave allows it, flying home in mid-December and back in late January is materially cheaper than the standard 20 December to 4 January shape everyone books.

Check current Manila to Dubai fares on Trip.com before you commit to dates, and price the one-way legs separately as well as the return. On Gulf routes the two are often not the same number.

Two practical notes. Book your domestic connection at the same time as the international ticket, not after, because the Manila to Cebu, Iloilo and Davao legs sell out around the 20th to 23rd. The airport part nobody plans for

Booking early does not save you from the terminal. Last season, NAIA handled 2.55 million passengers between 20 December 2025 and 5 January 2026, roughly 13,700 flight movements, up about 5 percent year on year. The peak single day was 20 December 2025 with 171,306 passengers and 950 movements, the highest single-day volume in the airport’s history. Terminal 3 alone took more than 90,000 of them that day. The equivalent forecast for this coming season is normally published by the airport operator in early December, so treat these as last year’s numbers, which is exactly what they are.

What that means in practice: four hours before an international departure on a peak date, not the usual three. OFWs should know about the OFW lounge at NAIA Terminal 3, which makes the wait considerably less grim.

If your flight leaves before 8am on a peak date, staying near the airport the night before is not indulgence, it is the difference between a queue and a missed flight. The Newport City area sits directly across from Terminal 3, and rooms there in December book out earlier than the flights do. The map below shows what is available and what it costs per night.

One more thing worth doing before you pay. December is typhoon-adjacent and the peak is dense enough that a single cancellation cascades for days. When is the deadline to book Christmas flights from the Philippines for 2026?
End of September for the best remaining prices, early October at the latest. After mid-October you are paying the peak rate. Long-haul routes to Europe and North America move earliest of all, so book those first. Booking them in August would have bought you more, but mid-September still beats anything you will see in November.

Is it cheaper to fly on Christmas Day itself?
Yes, consistently. Departures on 25 December and on 1 January are among the cheapest dates in the whole peak period, because almost nobody wants to be in the air. If your family gathering is on the 26th, flying on the 25th can save real money.

Will there be a seat sale that covers December 2026 travel?
Unlikely at any meaningful discount. The Cebu Pacific 9.9 sale that ran 8 to 10 September 2026 covers travel from 1 January 2027 only, and PAL’s deeper discount tier also starts in February 2027. Sales exist to fill quiet dates, and December 20 to January 7 is not quiet.

Is Clark actually cheaper than NAIA in December?
Often, though not always, and the gap varies by route. Price both, and include the ground transfer and any hotel night in the comparison rather than just the fare.

How early should I get to NAIA over Christmas?
Four hours for international departures on peak dates, three for domestic. Terminal 3 carried more than 90,000 passengers on the busiest day of last holiday season.

Should I book my domestic connection separately?
Book it at the same time, on the same ticket where possible. Separate tickets mean that if the international flight is late, the domestic leg is your problem, not the airline’s, and there are no seats left to rebook onto in late December.

The short version

Book by the end of this month if you can. Check whether your trip fits the 24 to 27 December break or the 30 December to 3 January one, because bridging both costs three leave days and everyone else has done the same maths. Fly midweek, price Clark and Cebu against Manila, and stop waiting for a seat sale that is not coming for these dates. The ber months decorations went up two weeks ago. The fares are already moving.
